WHAT IT IS: A first-person shooter with RPG elements, set on a far-off intergalactic wasteland. You play as one of four mercenaries whose main goal is to shoot everything that moves. Your other main goal is to collect the bits of glowing material (called loot) and cash that you'll find around every corner. A big part of the game is collecting to help you upgrade. That and shooting this with awesome guns. The publisher, Gearbox, actually created an AI system that allows for brands to create their own weapons. Several manufacturers in the game (early on, they have names like "Terrible" or "Cheap," meaning that they're old and rusty and ineffective) will make a slightly better or worse version of that[...]
Yes, you get a gun. Just not yet.K, so. There's a bunch of titles flooding gamers this fall, and a lot of them seem to be pretty good. But there's a difference between being good, and actually being worth $60. So which titles should make you break out your debit card?Let's start with Halo 3: ODST.WHAT IT IS: The latest installment in the Halo franchise, originally conceived as DLC, but eventually became it's own standalone title. ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. You are not going to be controlling Master Chief, but a regular soldier who isn't like nine feet tall. Initially, Bungie wanted to make the ODST concept an add-on to Halo 3 to enrich the story, but[...]
UFC 2009: Undisputed has sold millions of copies, and the momentum behind the sport, and the video game, continues to push the franchise to produce new content. Check out this clip of Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan in the studio working on audio for the next UFC game, which should compete with EA's MMA title, due out next summer, from one of the best sports game blogs out there, Pastapadre.com:"Joe Rogan has posted up a video of himself and Mike Goldberg recording some audio for UFC 2010. Nothing about the game to learn from the video except that clearly it's in active development and likely to be out next summer to compete with EA MMA."Speaking as someone with 90 wins[...]
Yes. Yes it is.I don't say that because it's out today, for XBox 360, Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 (and, I'm sure, in handheld form), I say that because I've never seen so much attention to detail in a sports game with an already firm foundation. The past few years, crabby fan boys have complained that the game offers too much of the same old thing, with annual roster updates being the only thing to rationalize a yearly purchase. And they may have had a bit of a point in earlier iterations of the game. After Madden 09's casual tilt, with customizable AI and, literally, do-overs, included in the final product, the community came out hard for the game that's[...]
Should you be into this kind of thing, I'm on twitter now, doing whatever people do on twitter - in my case, it's mostly bitching about the Mets, providing occasional bonus quotes, and rolling out archives of the work I've done on MensFitness.com. So follow me, and let me waste some of your time. It's not like you're doing anything with it, right?Twitter[...]
Tomorrow, I'll be on a flight out to Vegas to prepare for a photo shoot on Thursday involving former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer, and some top-notch NFL talent. Since I just plunked down the cash for a Blackberry, I should be able to tweet, providing a few snippets of interesting (or altogether useless) information.I haven't updated consistently, well, ever, but now that I have a big-kid phone, I think I'll be able to check in and at least pass along a quote or two. Maybe even some actual insight. Who knows? Anything's possible.Follow me @BrandonGuarneri, and let me know what you think.[...]
