I can't help but be taken aback by how forcefully so many people in this country are campaigning against health care reform. They're tactics are ugly - name-calling ("our President is a communist!") and rumor-mongering ("He'll kill the elderly!") chief among them. Obviously, everyone's allowed to have their own opinion in this country, but it's a fact, not an opinion, that big corporations currently control the majority of the U.S's health care programs, and lesser-developed countries than our own (at least industrially) have far more effective gov't-run health care programs (and somehow, they haven't become militant, socialist states.) This may or may not be in our best interests. We should stop worrying so much about everyone else, about buzzwords and scare[...]
Jeff Cavaliere has been a strength coach and physical therapist to elite baseball players (including many New York Mets). Check out this recent interview he did with me.How did you get interested in training? Long before I ever touched a weight I grew up a huge fan of pro wrestling and action movies. Needless to say, with guys like Arnold, Stallone, Ravishing Rick Rude, and The Hulkster, I found myself wondering what it would actually take to look like them. Of course, I didn't want to do any work to get the look...but I sure thought it would be cool to be like them. It wasn't until high school and my first introduction to competitive sports that weight training became[...]
That's what I said, but apparently, yes, there's a company out there that develops low-fat donuts without using artificial sweeteners. We just got a bunch of samples in from Holey Donuts, and they're pretty good. No, they're not as sinfully delicious as Krispy Kreme or DD, but if you are craving a donut, it's not a bad thing to have around. Some of the flavors are around 3 g fat with approximately 150 calories. Not a bad way to fix up your sweet tooth.Check them out here: http://holeydonuts.net/[...]
Joe Stankowski is a trainer in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He's been one of my closest advisers and best writers for the past five years. I remember having conversations with Joe years ago and hearing some of his "wild" ideas--stretching is a waste of time, stability training can be done without BOSU balls, the bench press isn't functional for football, etc.--which are now much more accepted (and gaining steam).I interviewed Joe recently to help you all get familiar with him. For more information, check out his blog, For more information, check out his blog, morningcupojoe.com, and his site, This Workout Doesn't Suck.Sean: How did you get interested in training?Joe: My history of lifting heavy stuff for fun goes back quite awhile.[...]
Thursday, June 2nd As I made the now familiar treck down to Guerrilla Fitness: CrossFit Montclair, I had a sentimental feeling knowing it would be the last WOD in my one month CrossFit experiment. When entering the gym, I greeted fellow warriors Caitlin, Gregg, Carlos, and other CrossFitters warming up to routine death metal. Before embarking upon the prescribed warmup, there was unfinished business I had to attend to. I ritualistically rolled up my sleeves and chalked my hands as if I was preparing armor for war. Before attacking, I stared loathingly up at my nemesis: pull up rings, highly intimidating in their gross simplicity. They returned my glare, twisting subtly back and forth in the still air of CrossFit[...]
Tuesday, June 30th While checking the WOD this morning before my the Tuesday at 7:00 PM session, I stumbled across an entirely new dimension of Guerrilla Fitness: CrossFit Montclair. Directly below each "WOD," there is a link entitled "comments." Before clicking that link today, I had mistakenly assumed that the comment section was merely to post your results from that day. While many CrossFitters often do leave their daily results, results themselves don't even scratch the surface of topics discussed in the section. Comments are where it all comes out: everything from trash talk, to gushy congratulations, to Guerrilla Fitness gossip. Now, I wouldn't want to air to readers unfamiliar with the characters at Guerrilla Fitness some of the funnier[...]
